Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops + Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops

Konami, working with Kojima Productions, has done a fantastic job with every Metal Gear Solid re-release or collector's edition to date. Sadly, MGS: Portable Ops + abruptly ends that tradition. We're not sure why Portable Ops + not only doesn't improve substantially on its predecessor, but actually trims off numerous features. The game is only twenty dollars, but it's a dubious value.

Leave No Witnesses

The graphics and controls of Portable Ops + will be instantly familiar for Portable Op vets. That means a smooth -- if inevitably awkward at bad moments -- control scheme, and a graphics engine that looks great but pays the price in jaggies and visible seams. Not much on the PSP really looks better than Portable Ops' engine, to be honest, but we'd hoped to see a tighter, more optimized version of the visuals for this expansion.

The cruelest jab at fans is that Portable Ops + has no story mode. Rather than continuing to tell the story of Big Boss in any way, we get "Infinity Mission." Infinity Mission is the MGS equivalent of a random dungeon hack, existing only to let you level up characters, get new characters, and level-up characters yet more. While a good grind can keep you occupied, that's never been the draw of the MGS series. At this point, it's safe to say that MGS fans are interested in the story, and MGS:PO + doesn't have one. And to be frank, it isn't a great grind.

The mechanics of Metal Gear Solid were translated brilliantly onto the PSP with Portable Ops, but we really don't want to spend dozens, if not hundreds of hours, with no goal in sight but more leveling and soldier abductions. It's a stealth action title, not a tactical grinder. The gameplay doesn't grow past the first dozen or so hours; it just boils down to capturing more and more faceless guys and hoping you find a rare. There is one benefit to absolutely owning the single-player: owning multiplayer. Unfortunately, it creates a substantial barrier to entry as well.

LAS VEGAS — 3-D Blu-ray discs alone aren’t going to make 3-D TV take off. Consumers have to be able to create and view their own three-dimensional home movies, student films, and the like.
To that end, Sony unveiled today a spankin’ new, 3-D-capable Handycam that promises to unleash your inner James Cameron, while also providing razor-sharp 1080p HD for those not quite ready to hop aboard the 3-D TV bandwagon.

On the outside, the Handycam HDR-TD10 boasts what Sony is calling “Double Full HD,” owing to the fact that each of the integrated dual lens (a setup necessary for shooting in true 3-D) contains all the key components for operation: A Sony G lens, CMOS image sensor, and image processor. Naturally, you’ll still need a 3-D TV to show off your custom content, but you can also view 3-D playback sans glasses on the Handycam’s optimized

Under the hood, the HDR-TD10 commands 64 GB of flash memory, as well as a 10-inch optical zoom for those extreme close-ups, 5.1-channel surround sound, and 7-megapixel still-image capability, if you’re just merely scouting locations for your next Avatar fanfic epic.
Look for the the HDR-TD10 on store shelves sometime in April, and be prepared to lay down about $1,500 for that budding director in your life.

Shogun Warriors Are Back In Stormtrooper Style

In the late 70's, Mattel imported toys from the Japanese "Machinder" line. There were some lovely diecast spaceships and robots, but towering above them were the 2 foot tall Jumbo Machinders, If only I'd had 15 lousy bucks back then.sold here in the US as "Shogun Warriors". In addition to their impressive size, the large robots (and Godzilla!) were equipped with shooting fists and many, many firing missiles.
Super7 Magazine is devoted to Japanese figure collecting, and for years has offered their own line of limited edition collectible vinyl figures, but this is their most ambitious project yet. This officially licensed Star Wars Stormtrooper manufactured in the same style as the original Shogun Warriors, the first Jumbo Shogun type toy to be made in 25 years. There never was a Stormtrooper back then, but there certainly could have been. The Stormtrooper features an articulated head & neck, wheels on the feet, the signature "firing fist" as well as a highly detailed version of the BlasTech blaster from the movies. Super7 is even using the same blow molding process for the Stormtrooper as they did for the original toys, to have an authentic feel throughout. This is our favorite type of project, when determined fans are able to create something new in the spirit of an older idea. However this isn't being marketed as a toy, but rather as a limited edition collectible. Super7 are taking preorders right now for their May 29th release date. Pre-orders will get free shipping as well as a special certificate. If my fist don't get you, my wheeled feet will! The trooper is $299, and will only be available as a limited issue. These are going to go fast because in this single product you have a collectible that's of interest to robot collectors, toy collectors, anime enthusiasts, and Star Wars fans. I predict that once these Stormtroopers are available in select stores, fists will be flying - literally!
